Message from the Chairman

Hello,  as the winter nights now begin to draw in, we reflect on the last few months and look back at what was a great summer for our Currie Star boys.  July saw four Currie Star year groups head off to the Gothia Cup - our 2000’s / 2003’s / 2004’s and 2005’s. The boys may not have come back with silverware but what they did come back with are memories that will last them a lifetime.

2001 U17’s – winning cups

The boys added the NB Huddersfield International Cup to the 2nd Division League title and League Cup they won in May. They were one nil down in the final game with only 60 seconds on the clock but they never gave in and that fighting spirit saw them equalise with barely the last kick of the ball to take the game to penalties, which they confidently won. A fantastic achievement.

We are very proud of what the boys achieved during the course of seasons 2016 / 17. Well done boys!!

2001 Colts U17’s – challenging start

We’ve had a hard start to the season with 2 games against 1st Division opposition in 2 cup competitions, but the boys rose to the challenge and acquitted themselves well with a disciplined performance.

Our form has dipped a bit recently in league games and we need to find our consistency -  we play some great passing football but need to know when to play defensively.  With a couple of injuries to contend with combined with a small squad its hard to make changes during games. We've got a couple of new boys in and will see how they settle.

We are entered in the Manchester Cup at Easter 2018 where we will travel down and play against different opposition and enjoy the bonding that these trips bring.  We have many happy memories of Rimini trip from last Easter and hope this one will be as good but fortunately has been slightly easier to organise! Roll on Easter.

2002 U16’s – strong start

Welcome the new players Scott Barton, Josh McLellan & Dylan Harrison.

We have started strongly in the league & cups - we won our first 5 games.   However the highlight so far was a 7-5 win in the Scottish Cup against a team from a higher league.  We were 3 nil down after 10 mins but came back to win the match.

Well done to all players for the start they have made and keep up the hard work.

2002 Colts U16’s – tough start but improving

It has been a difficult start to the season. A couple of heavy defeats at the start of the season had done nothing to dent the enthusiasm of the players, resulting in some great training sessions.

Another positive has been the numbers at training averaging around 16 per week. The squad is sitting at around 18 signed players, and hopefully the competition for places will kick on the team for the rest of the season.

The gradual increasing in the intensity of training has been embraced by the players, as the focus at the start of the season was getting "the basics" right and improving technique. The overall picture is positive as performances have noticeably improved and the enthusiasm has remained.

2003 U15’s – a great summer and it continues …

We attended the Gothia Cup in July, the boys all bonded and had a great experience in Sweden.  Thanks to parent helper Dean Sutherland who celebrated his 50th birthday during the trip, where he kept an eye on bedtime / lights out which was not quite the same as staying at Dalmahoy!

This season 13 boys resigned and we welcomed new signings Jozef Dick, James Reynold, Michael Anderson, Jak and Aaron Sutherland to the squad, who are enjoying their first season.  The squad are through to the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup and 2nd round of the South East Region.

2004 U14’s – fabulous experience

The start of the season came hot on the heels of 8 squad members returning from a fantastic trip to the Gothia Cup in July. It truly was a fabulous experience for the boys and coaches alike.

We've started the new season with a healthy squad of 17, welcoming new player, Nelson Egbule and are currently sitting at 5 wins from 5 league games in Division 4, having beaten Currie FC in our first game! We've also had a degree of Cup success, competing well against Division 1 and 2 opposition, and currently still in the SER Cup. We're now planning fundraising for Gothia Cup 2019 ....it really was that good!

2004 Colts U14's - great performance

We have put in a number of excellent performances so far this season including wins over Loanhead and Edinburgh United. We have also pushed table-toppers Civil Service Strollers all the way in a thrilling game before just losing out in the last few minutes.

We are currently mid-table in Division 4 having already played 3 of top teams in the opening phase of the season.

2005 U13’s – making the transition to 11's

Our first season playing 11’s.  We had a slow start with the long summer off and playing 7’s up to and at Gothia Cup in July.  Gothia Cup was a fantastic experience for the boys – thanks to all the coaches, parents and committee that made it happen, it will certainly be a memory the boys will treasure.

Unlike other clubs, our focus for 11’s only starting at the beginning of the season which meant our first few matches were pretty tough.  However, in recent weeks we have found better form and currently in the top half of Division 2 League Table.  We’re hoping for our form to continue to develop and gain more of those valuable 3 point wins
.

2005 Colts U13’s – first season in 11's

We have started out in our first season at 11’s and so far our results have been ok considering.  We have lost most of our Cup Ties but to opposition from higher divisions. Our league form has been better with 2 wins 2 draws and 2 defeats (one of which was due to not being able to field a team), this finds us in mid-table and the boys continue to show a great desire to improve.

2006 U12’s – final season of 7's

We start our final 7’s season with six teams across all four divisions. Last season we said goodbye to a few players and wish them well. Since then we've had a number of players join us: Owen Morrison, Callum Pearce, Jamie Tough, Noah Stuckey, Leo Stark, Cameron Kpedekpo, Sonny Nugent, Ben Cowdy and Bishr Ibraham.  Welcome - we hope you enjoy your time at Currie Star FC. We’ve also a 'new' coach, David Lorimer who switched from 2004s to 2006s - proving there is no escape!

We’ve retained the services of Declan Fergus, youth coach at Hearts, and UEFA licensed coach.  He’ll spend his time with each squad as we strive to improve performance across the entire year group.
Soon the boys have an amazing opportunity to be under the tuition of the Hibs coaches, as well as play on the hallowed/cursed (delete as applicable) turf of Easter Road.  No doubt we’ll have plenty of pictures of this fantastic experience to share in the next edition.

Finally, we’d like to say a big 'thank you' to our new kit sponsor, Firstcall Response, who’ll be providing the squad match kit and tracksuits – we truly appreciate their amazing generosity.

2007 U11’s – now 3 great performing teams

A few changes this season with shrinking to 3 teams to allow each squad to have enough players and ability for the appropriate league.  Our season has started well with the Maradonna’s unbeaten, Zidannes only one defeat and Beckhams winning half their games.

The teams are all playing well and passing well, heads up and looking to pass and move, so a lot of the coaching appears to be coming through at last. New coaches Davie and Kev have joined the ranks who have really helped moved the boys forward.

Highlights include attending the opening the new world of football Marine Drive which involved the boys being filmed, interviewed and photographed which can be seen on YFS website!

The boys are loving our new winter venue for training, and the squad is growing so potentially we’ll be making a 4th team soon!

As well as the Burns celebration, we’re competing in a few tournaments and potentially another day trip to a Premiership Match!

2008 U10’s picking up their new cars!

Clark Motorchoice sponsored our new kits, so the boys went to look at the cars they can buy when they become professional  (and to say thanks to Danny Flynn, the General Manager). Unfortunately I couldn’t talk him into giving us a car for a raffle prize at Race Night at Beechwood Bowling Club on 29th September, but maybe next year.  We did have some great prizes though – loads of booze obviously, but also a haircut by a top stylist from Cheynes, Golf at Longniddry, and tickets for Man City vs Burnley.  A massive thanks to all the parents who donated prizes and gave up their time to make the night a massive success.

The year group have also started opening the café at Dovecot each week, selling teas, coffees, soft drinks and bacon rolls.  Please tell your opponents, and also come in and spend a few quid.  It’s a great way for parents to meet, as well as giving a good impression to the teams that visit us.

On the football front, the boys have enjoyed moving to the lovely facilities at Malleny – with lights on a flat pitch!  They’ve continued to enjoy their matches, and we’ve seen some real improvement from the boys.

Looking forward the team are really excited about their forthcoming trip to Newcastle to watch a Premier League match and play against local teams.

2010 's U8's - players starting to gel

The 2010s are now well into their first season and fun fours. The squad continues to grow and develop. We are currently running 6 teams at each festival with 30 boys playing weekly and 42 in the squad – the future is indeed bright.

Outside of regular festivals we have been invited and played at Tynecaslte – last ever teams to play in front of the old stand no less – and at Musselburgh Windsor. In true Currie Star tradition we are strong and tend to dominate lots of games we play. The coaching from Play2Learn and the general ability of the squad means we are now seeing the gel as players, passing to each other and really getting stuck in – roll on the fives next year.

Heriot Watt University FC

A relatively strong start from the senior 1st team, taking part in the East of Scotland league, currently sees them 4th in the league, hoping to kick on as the season progresses and push for the top of the league.
